Every award looks at what your child has already achieved, how they perform on the day of the scholarship exam, and how they come across in a conversation with our Senior Leadership Team. The scholarships are named for Charles Darwin, Sir Philip Sidney and Shri Hari Mohan Gupta, three figures who shaped the School and its founding family.

The Darwin Academic Scholarship

For pupils who show intellectual curiosity, rigour and the habit of asking why

Charles Darwin studied at Shrewsbury School from 1818 to 1825, before the observations that led to On the Origin of Species. His statue stands outside the School's original building in Shrewsbury, and our own Darwin statue links the Bhopal campus to that legacy.

Darwin's genius was not speed or memory alone. It was the discipline to observe closely, the courage to question accepted ideas, and the patience to test a hunch until the evidence was clear. The Darwin Scholarship looks for young minds with that same temperament.

What our assessors look for

  • CuriosityThey ask why and how, and pursue questions beyond the syllabus.
  • Depth of thinkingThey reason step by step and see links between ideas.
  • Independence of mindThey weigh evidence and change their minds when the facts demand it.
  • BreadthThey read widely across science, mathematics, language and the humanities.
  • Intellectual resilienceThey stay with a hard problem and learn from wrong turns.
  • Clear expressionThey communicate ideas precisely, in writing and in conversation.

The Sidney Arts Scholarship

For pupils who excel in the arts, music, drama, debate, leadership or service

Sir Philip Sidney entered Shrewsbury School in 1564 and became the model Renaissance all-rounder: poet, critic, diplomat and soldier. In The Defence of Poesy he argued that the arts move people to feel, to imagine and to act well, a conviction at the heart of the stage, studio and concert hall at Shrewsbury India.

Sidney is also remembered for his character. Wounded in battle in 1586, he is said to have passed his water to a dying soldier whose need he judged greater than his own. Talent joined to kindness and courage is what this scholarship looks for.

What our assessors look for

  • Creative excellenceReal accomplishment in music, drama, dance, art, writing or debate.
  • Originality of voiceThey interpret rather than imitate, and bring something of their own.
  • Discipline of practiceThey rehearse, refine and hold themselves to a high standard.
  • Presence and confidenceThey perform, speak or exhibit with poise in front of an audience.
  • CollaborationThey make an ensemble, a cast or a team better.
  • Leadership and serviceThey use their talent to lift others and serve their community.

The HMG Sports Scholarship

For pupils who compete at a high level and show discipline, teamwork and spirit

The HMG Sports Scholarship is named for Shri Hari Mohan Gupta, whose vision brought the Shrewsbury tradition to India, and is awarded through JSWS (Jagran Social Welfare Society), the society that founded the School. It reflects the belief that character is built on the field as much as in the classroom.

Sport is designed into daily life across our 150-acre residential campus, and it carries forward some of Shrewsbury's proudest traditions, from rowing on the River Severn to the Hunt, often described as the oldest cross-country running club in the world. The HMG Scholarship makes sure the most talented young athletes can grow in that setting, whatever their means.

What our assessors look for

  • Sporting abilityProven performance at district, state, national or international level.
  • CommitmentConsistent training and a willingness to push beyond comfort.
  • Self-masteryComposure under pressure, in victory and in defeat.
  • TeamworkThey put the team first and raise the standard of those around them.
  • Sportsmanship and integrityThey compete hard and fairly, and respect opponents and officials.
  • BalanceThey manage training alongside their studies and boarding life.
